Cape Cod Healthcare
In 1996, Cape Cod Hospital and Falmouth Hospital merged to form Cape Cod Healthcare, which now is the largest provider of health care on the Cape. Cape Cod Healthcare’s primary goal is to identify the health care needs of Cape Cod’s residents and visitors, and then meet those needs by providing high quality and compassionate medical services.
Cape Cod Healthcare includes the two hospitals, plus a group of affiliated health care organizations which collectively offer comprehensive health care services throughout Cape Cod.
Cape CodHospital Cape CodHospital, located in Hyannis, is the larger of the two hospitals with 249 licensed beds (a new patient tower is under construction, which will add 60 beds). The medical staff consists of 98 primary care physicians and 220 specialists. The hospital has been listed among the nation’s “Top 100 Hospitals” several times in recent years, including 2006. Further recognition of Cape Cod Hospital’s excellence was demonstrated within the past year, when the Massachusetts Department of Public Health approved the Hospital’s application to perform open-heart surgical procedures. Consequently, Cape CodHospital will be one of only three community hospitals in Massachusetts that is allowed to engage in such cardiac surgery. (Previously only teaching hospitals in the Commonwealth have been permitted to have open-heart surgery programs). Staff members from Brigham and Women’s Hospital of Boston are assisting in development and implementation of the program, which will be phased in over the next three years, beginning in 2002.
FalmouthHospital FalmouthHospital is an 83-bed facility with a medical staff of 60 primary care physicians and 140 specialists. Its more than 600 employees have been commended for “clinical excellence” and “patient-centered” compassionate care. FalmouthHospital is conveniently located within an expansive medical complex. The FalmouthHospital campus includes the JMLCareCenter, a skilled nursing facility offering its patients sub-acute care, rehabilitative services and a newly expanded adult day health program. Heritage at Falmouth, an assisted living community for older adults, the Visiting Nurses Association of Cape Cod, and extensive physician services complete the campus continuum of care. In 2006, FalmouthHospital was recognized for top-quality healthcare when it was selected one of “50 Exceptional Hospitals,” based on a nationwide survey conducted by Consumer’s Digest and The Leapfrog Group. The
Visiting Nurses Association (VNA) of Cape Cod A Cape Cod Healthcare affiliate, the VNA is an outstanding provider of community-based health care. Cape Cod’s VNA offers traditional home health care private nursing and home health care service, as well as a child care center in Falmouth. People frequently call to find where to go for information on a variety of topics such as support groups, prescription drug coverage, assistance for caregivers, home medical equipment, physicians taking new patients, etc. Another service is the VNA’s Mobile Health Link program. This program delivers health care to “under served individuals and families” and has a 28’ van that travels to the Upper, Mid, Lower and OuterCape for one week at a time providing service. Recently the VNA was licensed by Medicare to provide hospice and palliative care services. This additional service means that VNA patients who have a terminal diagnosis can continue their care with their VNA caregivers.
