Employment
Cape Cod is a popular, internationally-known visitor destination. We attract highly talented professionals who select our region for the unique lifestyle. Cape Cod is rarely a career choice, though many people do successfully settle here and enjoy full and prosperous lives.
Invariably, one of the questions that people ask about Cape Cod is “Can I find a job here?” The answer is yes, but the kind of job will depend more on your flexibility, your creativity and your resiliency, than on your skills or experiences. Here are some realistic expectations when you make that decision to relocate. We want it to be an informed decision that will not disappoint.
Those who successfully transition into our workplace are often faced with sacrifices necessary to “make it work.” There are good employment opportunities, but they can be hard to identify and it takes time to unearth them. Having a realistic time frame to find the right situation is helpful.
With a working population of over 100,000 (depending on the season), the majority of employment opportunities are found in industries like our growing health care industry, or the hospitality industry. Other jobs are found in the many small “mom & pop” entrepreneurial businesses that service our growing retirement population. It’s important for you to recognize that the salaries offered in this sector reflect the size or seasonality of these businesses.
For those who choose Cape Cod and find that they either miss the challenge or the salaries of the larger corporate world, the Boston, South Shore and Providence metropolitan areas are nearby, where opportunities are greater. Each metro area is approximately 70 miles from our Canal bridges and many residents either drive, or use the commuter buses.
