Once you have obtained your permits or approval from the town, you will need to choose a legal name for your business. In Massachusetts , business names are registered in two ways. The names of incorporated businesses must be registered with the Commonwealth’s Corporate Division. (Find out how to incorporate your business by calling 617-727-4919.)
However, most home-grown businesses are not incorporated. Their names should be registered by applying for a “Doing Business As” license. An application for a DBA license can be obtained through the town clerk’s office at the local town hall. For a small fee, a DBA license secures your business name within the town where your business is located. If you plan to post a sign for your business, you should again contact your town’s zoning enforcement person. There are by-laws that deal specifically with commercial sign issues, including size, lighting and placement.
