Cape Cod Stranding Network

Early Communications on Cape Cod
Time: 2 p.m.
Location: Salt Pond Visitor Center at Cape Cod National Seashore, Eastham
Dick Kraycir of the Chatham Marconi Maritime Center will present an illustrated
lecture on the history of communications on Cape Cod, including the significant role
that Marconi and RCA had with Chatham radio and ship-to-shore communications
around the world. The program will include a showing of the award-winning
documentary “Chatham Radio: WCC The Untold Story,” narrated by Walter Cronkite.

Inflatable whale exhibit: See how big a whale really is!
Time: Noon to 2 p.m.
Location: Cape Cod Mall, Hyannis
Biologists from the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society and the
Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary will display a life-sized (50’) critically
endangered North Atlantic right whale. The whale is inflatable and small groups can
go inside to learn about whales and appreciate their massive size. North Atlantic
right whales are the official state whale of Massachusetts and one of the most
ndangered species on the planet. Whale artifacts will also be displayed.

Kayak the Waterways of Cape Cod
Time: 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.      
Location: The River, Little Pleasant Bay, Orleans
Explore the natural beauty and maritime history of Cape Cod’s unique water
trails by kayak, led by certified kayak instructor and coastal naturalist Dick Hilmer
and his team of certified guides.
Cost: Cost is $20 for adults and $15 for children 16 years of age or under. Proceeds
to benefit the Waterways of Cape Cod project of the Provincetown Center for Coastal
Studies.

The Nauset Light Lifesavers Walk

Location: Meet at Nauset Light parking lot in North Eastham

Sandy Neck Barrier Beach Nature Hike
Time: 10 a.m.
Location: Meet at the Gatehouse at Sandy Neck Beach. Located at the end of Sandy
Neck Rd. north off Route 6A in West Barnstable.
Enjoy a 1.5 mile hike in deep sand where topics will include the geology of Sandy Neck, Sandy Neck flora and fauna, Sandy Neck's cultural history and whales on Sandy Neck. Bring water and binoculars.

The Coast’s First Responders
Time: 9 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Location: Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Buzzards Bay
In cooperation with the Massachusetts Maritime Academy and in conjunction with the Academy’s open house, a United States Coast Guard UH-60 helicopter will be on static display on academy grounds. The public is invited to come see firsthand the aircraft used to conduct emergency rescue operations from vessels in distress, to assist in large mammal disentanglement operations, for fishery enforcement and for homeland security patrols.

Trolleys Ahoy
Time: 10 to 4 p.m.
Location: Sandwich Village
Trolleys Ahoy will provide transportation around to the village retailers and lovely restaurants, by the Sandwich Library, out to Green Briar and up to Heritage Museums & Gardens for their many Maritime exhibits. It will also go to Merchant Square to view the Sailors Valentine line of jewelry at Robert Guertin Jewelers, and around the East Basin to the Canal Visitors Center to steer the canal from the Captains chair.
