Nelson Cook receives the 2003 Massachusetts Hospitality Award for the
Cape Cod region
Nelson Cook, Director of Sales at the Lighthouse Inn in West Dennis
received this year's Massachusetts Hospitality Award for the Cape Cod
region at this year's Governor's Conference on Travel & Tourism. The
award was presented to Cook by Lt. Governor Kerry Healey in Boston before
his peers in the industry.
Nominated by the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, Cook was recognized for
his 40+ years in sales, marketing and conference services. He has been
selling the wonders of Cape Cod since 1973 and is highly valued as an
active Cape Chamber volunteer. Cook was tapped in 1999 to lead a new
initiative at the Chamber as it hired its first full-time V.P. of Sales,
dedicated to the meeting & incentive market. As committee chair, Cook
has guided the energetic group to great success as Cape Cod began making
its mark on the meeting planners itineraries. In this role he has gained
the respect and admiration of all he has worked with.
Congratulations, Nelson, for a well-deserved honor!

UPDATE: New panelist at Avoiding Hiring Hazards
Workshop |
 |
We have a late addition to the Avoiding
Hiring Hazards panel, reflecting anticipated delays for foreign
seasonal employees in getting Social Security numbers. Ed White of
the Social Security Administration in Hyannis will join the panel
and explain the procedures they have put in place to help keep the
process smooth. You will want to know about this!
SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS FOR NONCITIZENS Information for
Employers - April 2003
New procedures for issuing Social Security Numbers (SSN) to non
citizens require SSA to verify the applicant's employment
authorization documents with the Office of Homeland Security
(formerly the INS) before processing the SSN application. This
verification process has extended the timeframe for issuing a SSN by
several days, and, in some cases, by several weeks. Most of the
time, the information is available online within 10 days from the
date the noncitizen enters the US.
In past years, the SSA offices in Hyannis and Falmouth have
expedited processing SSN applications for H2B visa and J1 visa
seasonal workers, assigning a SSN within 1 - 2 days, and mailing a
card within 7 days. They will continue to process these applications
as expeditiously as possible, but want employers to be aware of the
delays that prospective summer employees may experience this year
around SSNs and SSN cards. The process they have put in place will
be explained at the April 16th meeting.
