Cape Cod Chamber Joins "Green" Hotels
Association |
 |
Wendy Northcross, Cape Cod Chamber CEO,
announced that the Chamber joined the "Green" Hotels Association in
March as an educator member. This membership honors the Chamber's
commitment to help protect Cape Cod-and our earth- through a
campaign to enlist more Cape lodging members in the organization.
Properties can qualify for membership in this growing and
influential organization by instituting measures that save water,
energy and reduce solid waste. Hotels can easily institute
relatively simple changes, such as providing gentle reminders in
several languages asking guests to consider re-using their towels a
second time and foregoing a change of bed linens every day. Not only
will thousands of gallons of water and detergent be saved, but this
directly affects sewage volume and toxicity. Such seemingly minor
changes can save the property up to 5% in utility costs (properties
can save more than $6.50 per day per occupied room*) and at least
70% of guests will likely participate. Properties can also readily
institute recycling programs for aluminum cans, glass, newspapers,
cardboard and other solid waste, thereby making a direct
contribution to lessening the impact of solid waste volume on our
landfills. Since Cape Cod trucks solid waste, for the most part, off
Cape, this is of particular importance.
Other changes, which can contribute to the "greening" of Cape
Cod, include: installing water-saving toilet dams and low-flow
showerheads, providing reminders for guests to turn off lights and
HVAC and to take hotel bar soaps home for use rather than
discarding. Individually, these seem like relatively minuscule
measures, but, as a destination, Cape Cod can truly make a
difference in promoting ecological consciousness throughout the Cape
and with its visitors, the majority of which will applaud and praise
such efforts!
In addition to the obvious positive impact of such changes,
hoteliers, innkeepers and B&B owners who have adopted "green"
practices are finding their conservation measures have helped reduce
the negative impact of the recent economic downturn.

Visitors are encouraged to post resumes online and search job
listings thorough this site simply by providing a current e-mail
