Barnstable High School Workshop Participants Needed
Clare O'Connor is putting together a panel on local "hot" outdoors careers for students to find out about: what it takes to succeed, what the job is like, what skills it requires, etc. We have room for a landscaper to join the panel, as well as someone in the construction trades--it should be someone who relates well to kids, has a good story, and any relationship to BHS (former student?) is a real plus! February 12th, from 10 - 11:30 in Hyannis, place under discussion. It will be a panel for the full group of 50 students and then a breakout with 12 students more interested in that field.

"A Wonderful Way of Life", the Cape Cod Chamber's Relocation / Membership Directory
Advertising in the Cape Cod Chamber's Relocation / Membership directory is the perfect way to get the word out about the service or product you offer. 2002 was our first year with this publication. It proved to be a tremendous success, very well received not only by the advertisers but by our 5,000 members and affiliate members on Cape Cod. This directory also serves as our relocation fulfillment piece. A large number of businesses and people relocating to the Cape call the Chamber to request it.

The Cape Cod Chamber is currently working with some local Welcoming Committees for additional distribution. They see that this beautiful directory will definitely enhance their welcoming package. This year the Chamber will be adding a lot more local information and advertising to the relocation section.

We have many people who request our membership directory because they know that businesses that belong to their Chamber tend to be more reputable and business friendly. Please call me with any questions you may have at (508)-862-0700 ext. 514

Workshare Program from the MA Division of Employment & Training
At the recent workshop done by Alex Gilchrist of the Division of Employment & Training, he shared the financial implications of using this program for companies who are experiencing slowdowns. Although seasonal employers cannot use this, many "cyclical" lodging and restaurants who want to keep year round staff but close down for a short period, or reduce hours for staff can take benefit of this program.

Here's the rough calculation for you and for your workers:

An employee makes $600 a week.

His/her hours are cut 50%, making the earnings $300 a week.

If the person were just to file for unemployment, they would get $100, making their total earnings $400, an out of pocket loss.

Under Workshare, they get 50% of their unemployment insurance, bringing their income to $450. This reduces their out of pocket loss to $150 a week, and they continue to have benefits from the employer.

They can then earn, on a separate job, up to $151 a week. This figure ($151) is standard, no matter what their salary is--$1,000 a week, or $100 a week. So, their potential earnings are the same.

To make this work, an employer has to have 2 people on the same "plan." That is, both would need to be cut 50% of their hours, for example.

Even with this program, if the company completely closes down for two weeks, the employee can file for unemployment for that period of no salary, and then get re-enrolled in Workshare when the business reopens.

This program is designed to help employers hold on to their employees. It does reflect on your unemployment insurance "bankroll," but that bankroll has a maximum to the amount accrued anyway.

    2003 Cape Cod Golf Passport
The new bigger, more extensive 2003 Cape Cod Golf Passport is on sale now!

The Passport has more courses - 28 of the Cape's 29 public facilities - plus local restaurants and hotels offering discounts to play, eat or stay at their establishments.

The values offered by the courses are even better than last year and we all know what a bargain those offers were. For accommodations, some of the participating hotels are offering up to 20% off room rates seven nights a week. Restaurants have reduced their costs including some with a free meal for every four persons dining out at that establishment.

And the best news is that the Passport costs the same as last year, just $79 for savings that can add up to over $1,750! The Passport may be ordered online or you can pick one up at our visitor centers (Junction of Route 6 & 132, Hyannis or Route 25 Eastbound, Plymouth) or administration office (307 Main St. Suite 2, Hyannis in the CCBT building).
